GET GROWING
SUSTAINABLY
OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
At Bayview Flowers we are committed to growing sustainably. As a vertically integrated company we are able to uniquely maximize energy efficiencies to produce our organic fertilizer in a more environmentally-friendly manner. Get Growing helps close the nutrient loop by recovering nutrients in a more easily usable form from places in the food system where nutrients concentrate, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint.
PLANT BASED & MADE FROM NATURAL & RECYCLED INGREDIENTS
Get Growing is plant based and made from natural and recycled ingredients. Made using sustainable methods and certified for organic input, Get Growing organic fertilizer makes the perfect fertilizer for all plants, vegetables and more.
HELPS PLANTS THRIVE
Get Growing is filled with both macronutrients and micronutrients that plants need to grow and thrive. These nutrients are extracted naturally, and unlike other fertilizers are not made from fossil fuels and are not the product of energy-intensive processes like mining, or the Haber-Bosch process. Get Growing is a ready-to-use, all-purpose formula that will not cause leaf burn because it contains natural concentrations of NPK.
Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater collection in our greenhouses provides a sustainable, reusable source of water that helps us maintain plant health while they grow. Unlike other water sources, rainwater systems take the best that nature provides. Using rainwater for our greenhouses provides several advantages including:
Water Quality
Unlike water drawn from public utilities or well water, rainwater contains fewer impurities and unwanted contaminants. Conventional tap water contains treatment chemicals, salts, and other minerals that can be harmful to soil and plants. Similarly, well water contains minerals from bedrock and the surrounding aquifer. On the other hand, Rainwater systems provide naturally soft water that is free of chemicals and other contaminants.
Cost Savings
Investing in sustainable greenhouse water systems will save you money during the lifetime of your garden. With improved water quality and environmentally sound practices, rainwater harvesting reduces overhead costs from running your greenhouses.
Nutrient Additives
Find just the right mix to let your plants grow healthy and strong. The right balance of nutrient additives is easy when you use rainwater. Its natural pH level and the lack of other contaminants make rainwater the ideal source when concocting precise nutrient concentrations for your greenhouse plants.
We are able to collect up to 933,000 gallons of water with our Rainwater Harvesting system!
SOLAR POWERED GREENHOUSES
In 2014, Bayview Flowers fully implemented a 250 kilowatt solar energy system by installing 1200 solar panels. Since its installation, the system has generated thousands of kilowatts. As of February, 2016 the energy generated by this system equated to about 300,000,000 batteries or approximately 800,000 km travelled by a car. This project is another way in which Bayview Flowers is trying to support Ontario’s Green Energy initiatives. This addition provided us with:
Cost savings
Installing a solar greenhouse at first may need some money, but this will allow you to have zero running costs later. You will won’t need any other source for power, hence you will save a lot of electricity bills.
Easy to implement
Installing a solar greenhouse is not a complex thing to do. You don’t need that much work or to have all the information about it to make it run.
Reliability
Solar greenhouses can run smoothly without any problems as long as it’s set up right.
It gets its power from the sun so you won’t have any problems with the power if the electricity goes out or maintenance is needed, you will always be ready to go.
Environment friendly
One main point of the benefits of a solar greenhouse is that you also do your duty towards the environment and reduce your carbon footprint by a ton.
Our Sustainable Impact
Our anaerobic digester produces enough sustainable energy each year to:
Eliminating 1293 tonnes of CO2 Emissions
Equivalent to powering
250+ homes
Divert 10,000 tonnes of waste from the landfills
ANAEROBIC DIGESTION: ENERGY MATTERS
WHAT IS ANAEROBIC DIGESTION?
An anaerobic digestion system uses fermentation to convert organic waste matter into biogas, which can be used as a renewable, carbon-neutral fuel source. Unlike fossil fuels, biogas doesn’t require as much energy to produce or distribute. It also helps mitigate methane emissions, because technological advancements permit anaerobic digesters to receive waste streams with higher levels of physical impurities that would normally go into landfills. At the same time, the by-product of this process (digestate) becomes nutrient-rich and suitable for re-use as an organic fertilizer. Bayview generates 6500 m3 of nutrient rich fertilizer—enough to provide nutrients for about 500 acres of land.
Bayview’s digestion system is unique in that it is the first example which utilizes thermophilic digestion to produce higher levels of biogas and simultaneously pasteurizes the digestate for its safe handling. This facility is a regulated mixed anaerobic digestion facility operating under OMAFRA rules in the Nutrient Management Regulation.
GREENER GROWING
Digestate offers an excellent alternative to energy-intensive chemical fertilizers as it releases very low (or neutral) GHG emission values throughout its production cycle. By diverting over 10,000 tonnes of organic waste per year from landfills into our anaerobic digester, we are helping local businesses to reduce their carbon footprint, while producing enough sustainable energy to heat our greenhouses and provide electricity to 250+ homes each year.
This equates to reducing CO2 emissions by 1293 metric tonnes annually. Combined with our anaerobic digester, Bayview also utilizes solar power and participate in rainwater harvesting to further reduce our carbon footprint.
After our anaerobic digestion process is finalized, all that remains are the separated solids. We are able to sell this by-product to a local soil company which is able to utilize these solids to help boost the NPK of the soil that they create and sell locally. This makes us unique as most other anaerobic digesters would send this by-product back to landfills. The approach we take allows us to be 100% waste-free.
